Landscape General Labourer / On-Call Crew Member

Compensation: $18.00 per hour

Overview

Silver Leaf Nurseries is seeking a dependable and hardworking Landscape General Labourer to join our team. This is a highly flexible, weather-dependent position. Hours vary from 1 to 40 hours per week depending on rain and project schedules. Shift notifications are sometimes given a week in advance, but can often be on short notice (up to 1 hour before the shift). If you are looking for flexible outdoor work and can adapt to an unpredictable schedule, this role is for you.

Main Responsibilities

Planting & Groundwork: Dig holes manually using shovels and hand tools to plant trees, shrubs, and potted plants.
Tree Care: Tie, stake, mulch, and create proper soil rings around newly planted trees.
Material Handling: Load and unload garden tools, soil, mulch, heavy trees, shrubs, and potted plants.
Site Cleanup: Gather all equipment, debris, and tools to leave job sites completely clean.
Occasional Tasks: Assist with basic tree pruning, branch bagging, and rare hardscaping projects like paving stone walkways or patios.

Job Requirements

Safety Gear: You must purchase and wear mandatory CSA-approved steel-toe and steel-plate work boots.
Schedule Flexibility: Must be comfortable with an erratic, weather-dependent, on-call schedule.
Physical Fitness: Ability to perform heavy lifting and continuous manual labour outdoors in various weather conditions.

Asset Qualifications (Preferred but Not Required)

Ownership of a truck equipped with a hitch, and experience towing 20-30 foot trailers.
Experience operating skid steers (e.g. 1-ton tractors with excavator, auger, or bulldozer attachments).

Nursery Worker / Retail Garden Centre Attendant

Overview

Silver Leaf Nurseries is looking for a physical, detail-oriented Nursery Worker to maintain our outdoor retail show floor and assist customers. This is an on-call, weather-dependent position with hours ranging from 1 to 40 hours per week. If you love working with plants, enjoy physical outdoor work, and can adapt to an unpredictable schedule, we want to hear from you.

Main Responsibilities

Plant Watering & Care: Operate gas-powered water pumps and manage heavy, 50-foot hoses. Provide fast, precise timed watering to thousands of plants each morning and spot-water stressed plants midday.
Merchandising & Displays: Move and face heavy potted plants and hanging baskets so the best side faces customers. Tag and price inventory, and secure plants against high winds.
Customer Service: Assist guests on the show floor, help them locate plants, and safely load heavy items like trees and bags of soil or mulch into customer vehicles.
Site Maintenance: Keep the outdoor show floor clean and presentable using a leaf blower to clear dead leaves and debris.
Rare Duties: Cash out customers and provide basic advice on plant characteristics (size, bloom times, soil needs).

Job Requirements

Physical Strength: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly and stand for extended periods.
Safety Gear: You must purchase and wear mandatory CSA-approved steel-toe and steel-plate work boots.
Schedule Flexibility: Must be comfortable with an erratic, weather-dependent, on-call schedule.
